A tiny bathroom DIY for anyone who enjoys making everyday products at home. 🤎

Making your own toothpaste is surprisingly simple. This homemade version combines coconut oil, baking soda and xylitol, with optional peppermint oil for a fresh flavor.

It takes only a few minutes to mix and can be stored in a small clean jar.

Think of this recipe as a homemade personal-care experiment, rather than a replacement for evidence-based dental care.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp xylitol
  • Peppermint oil — optional
  • A small clean jar or container

That’s it. ✨

How to Make Homemade Toothpaste

01 — Add the coconut oil

Start with 4 tablespoons of coconut oil.

If your coconut oil is firm, allow it to soften enough to mix easily.

02 — Add the baking soda

Add 2 teaspoons of baking soda.

Mix it thoroughly into the coconut oil until the texture becomes consistent.

03 — Add the xylitol

Add 2 teaspoons of xylitol and mix everything together.

Xylitol gives the mixture a sweeter taste without using regular sugar.

04 — Add peppermint oil

If you’d like a minty flavor, you can add peppermint oil.

Use an ingredient intended and labeled for appropriate oral/topical use, and follow the manufacturer’s directions for dilution and use. Don’t assume that an essential oil is automatically suitable for use inside the mouth simply because it is marketed as an essential oil.

05 — Transfer to a clean container

Once everything is mixed, transfer your homemade toothpaste into a small, clean container with a lid.

A little amber glass jar would make this DIY look particularly pretty on a bathroom shelf. 🤎

And Please Don’t Spit It Down the Sink 😅

This is one little detail that is actually worth remembering.

Because the recipe contains coconut oil, spit the mixture into the trash rather than the sink.

It keeps the oily mixture out of your drain and is a much better habit for this particular DIY.
