A simple little DIY for your bathroom shelf. 🤎
Making your own deodorant doesn’t have to be complicated. This simple coconut oil recipe uses just a few ingredients and takes only a couple of minutes to mix together.
The finished deodorant has a soft, creamy texture when warm and becomes firmer after a little time in the refrigerator. You can keep it in a small jar or transfer it into an empty deodorant stick container for an easier application.

What You’ll Need
- ½ cup white coconut oil
- ⅓ cup arrowroot powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda

A note about the coconut oil
For this recipe, use white coconut oil rather than a yellow-colored version. Some people report that yellow coconut oil can leave marks on clothing, so white coconut oil is the preferred choice for this DIY.
If your coconut oil is solid, you don’t need to microwave it. Instead, work it with a fork until it becomes a smooth, workable paste.
How to Make DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant
01 — Soften the coconut oil
Start with ½ cup of white coconut oil.
If it’s firm, use a fork to mix and work the coconut oil until it becomes soft and paste-like. You don’t need to completely liquefy it.
02 — Add the arrowroot powder
Add ⅓ cup of arrowroot powder to the coconut oil.
Mix thoroughly until the powder is incorporated and the mixture becomes smooth.
03 — Add the baking soda
Add ½ teaspoon of baking soda and mix again.
That’s essentially your basic deodorant mixture finished.
04 — Customize it
If you’d like, you can add a small amount of skin-safe essential oil for fragrance.
You can also add vitamin E if you’d like to experiment with the texture and feel of the mixture.
Keep any optional ingredients appropriate for topical use and be mindful that essential oils can irritate sensitive skin.
05 — Let it set
Transfer the mixture into either:
- an empty deodorant stick container, or
- a small clean jar.
Place it in the refrigerator for a few hours until it becomes firm.
And that’s it. ✨

Jar or Deodorant Stick?
Both work — it mostly comes down to how you prefer to use it.
A small jar gives the DIY a more natural, handmade feel and makes it easy to scoop out a small amount.
An empty deodorant stick container makes the finished product feel much more like a traditional deodorant and can be more convenient for everyday use.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
This is a homemade personal-care recipe, so it’s worth remembering that everyone’s skin is different.
Baking soda and essential oils can be irritating for some people, particularly on sensitive or freshly shaved skin. If you’re trying the recipe for the first time, consider testing a small amount on a small area of skin first and stop using it if irritation occurs.
Also, this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — the purpose and experience aren’t necessarily the same as a conventional antiperspirant product.
The Little DIY Luxury
There is something satisfying about making a product you normally buy ready-made.
A few simple ingredients, a little mixing and a pretty jar are enough to create your own homemade deodorant — and it takes almost no time.
Sometimes the nicest DIYs aren’t elaborate projects.
They’re the tiny everyday things you can make yourself. 🤎
