Bring the girl — without the cow — into the city.

There is something about a great pair of cowboy boots that instantly makes an outfit more interesting.
But you don’t have to go full Western to wear them.
In fact, my favourite way to style them this fall is almost the opposite: take the statement boots out of the countryside and bring them straight into the city.
Think oversized knitwear, tiny skirts, sunglasses, gold jewelry, a great handbag and just enough Western attitude to make people wonder where the outfit is going next.
Because sometimes the best way to wear a statement piece is to let it be the only thing making a statement.

01 — Let the Boots Be the Main Character
If you’re wearing a pair of tall Western boots with embroidery, you already have your statement piece.
You don’t need fringe everywhere. You don’t need a cowboy hat. You don’t need to build an entire Western outfit around them.
Let the boots do the talking.
A pair of dark brown embroidered cowboy boots works especially beautifully with an autumn wardrobe because the colour feels rich and easy to combine with cream, chocolate brown, black, denim and warm neutrals.
The taller silhouette also makes them particularly fun to wear with shorter hemlines.
A mini skirt + knee-high boots is one of those combinations that immediately feels like an outfit rather than just clothes thrown together.

02 — Add Something Soft
This is where I think the look gets interesting.
Instead of pairing Western boots with a traditional Western shirt, try something completely different.
An oversized cream knit sweater creates a beautiful contrast with structured leather boots.
I love the idea of an off-the-shoulder or slightly oversized sweater because it makes the outfit feel relaxed and feminine while the boots bring in that little bit of attitude.
The contrast is what makes the outfit work:
soft knit + structured leather
feminine silhouette + Western details
cozy autumn texture + statement footwear
It’s a much more unexpected combination.

03 — Keep the Rest of the Outfit Effortlessly Cool
This is where the IT Girl part comes in.
The extra pieces shouldn’t compete with the boots. They should make the outfit feel like her.
Think:
- oversized sunglasses
- layered gold necklaces
- small gold hoops
- a leather shoulder bag
- a patterned scarf tied into the hair
- a simple mini skirt
- sheer tights when it gets colder
These details give the outfit personality without turning it into a costume.
And that’s really the trick.
The boots say cowgirl. Everything else says city girl.

04 — Western Boots Don’t Need a Ranch
One of my favourite things about this trend is that you don’t actually need a Western setting to make it work.
In fact, I think the contrast is better when you put the boots somewhere completely unexpected.
A café terrace.
A European city street.
Stone steps.
A little black coat.
A tiny skirt.
Your favourite sunglasses.
Suddenly those same cowboy boots feel less country concert and more fashion-editorial cool girl.
That’s the look I’m after.

05 — Brown Boots Are Surprisingly Easy to Style
Dark brown is one of those colours that quietly works with almost everything in an autumn wardrobe.
For a softer look, pair the boots with:
Cream + chocolate brown + warm beige
For something moodier:
Brown + black + burgundy
For a more casual outfit:
Brown + denim + oversized knitwear
And if you want to lean into the Western inspiration without going all the way:
Brown boots + mini skirt + knitwear + gold jewelry
The boots become the little unexpected detail that makes the whole outfit feel more intentional.

06 — The Pair That Inspired This Look
For this outfit, the statement piece is a pair of dark brown knee-high Western boots with contrasting embroidered detailing.
I particularly like the combination of the tall shaft, pointed toe and lower stacked heel because it gives the boots a strong silhouette without making the outfit feel overly costume-like.
They’re the kind of piece I’d build the outfit around rather than trying to make them disappear into it.

The Formula
If you’re wondering how to recreate the look without buying an entirely new wardrobe, here’s the formula I’d use:
ONE STATEMENT PIECE
Western boots.
ONE SOFT PIECE
Oversized cream knitwear.
ONE SHORT SILHOUETTE
Mini skirt or shorts.
A FEW GOLD DETAILS
Jewelry, sunglasses hardware or a small bag.
ONE PERSONAL EXTRA
A scarf, vintage-looking accessory or something slightly unexpected.
And that’s it.
You don’t need to look like you’re going to a rodeo.
You just need to let the boots bring a little bit of yee-haw energy into your everyday wardrobe. 🤎
Bring the Girl — Without the Cow
Maybe that’s the whole point of the look.
Take the fun part of the cowgirl aesthetic — the boots, the attitude, the confidence — and leave the rest behind.
Put them with your favourite city clothes.
Wear them with your sunglasses.
Wear them with a ridiculously oversized sweater.
Wear them to coffee.
Wear them with a mini skirt.
Bring the girl.
Leave the cow.
And, obviously…
YEEHAW.
